Richmond Hospital Medical Illustrations


The Richmond Hospital Medical Illustrations is a collection of illustrations depicting medical conditions treated at the Richmond Hospital, Dublin. The illustrations mainly date from the 19th century, with a small number from the early 20th century, and many depict diseases that are now not commonly seen. The illustrations are accompanied by two catalogues listing the drawings. The artist is not identified for many of the illustrations but known artists include J. Connolly, J.H. Burnside, Miss B. O'Farrell, and Sydney A. Sewell. The cases depicted include those treated by surgeons associated with Richmond Hospital such as Robert Adams, Edward Hutton, Christopher Fleming, John Hamilton, and Robert William Smith. This collection will be of interest to medical educators and practitioners, public health specialists, historians of medicine, social historians and humanities scholars more generally.

Ulcer of the leg

Gangrene of leg from injury


Watercolour medical illustration depicting gangrene. It has the alternative reference number 1188 and P7A on the front. The Richmond Hospital Museum reference is B.a.14. The entry for this in P263/1 pg. 11 reads 'Gangrene of leg from injury. Thomas Long aet 54'. The artist's name is in the bottom right corner 'J. Connolly fec.t' and in the left corner 'Tho.s Long Aet 54'. The handwritten note on the back reads 'Thomas Long atet 54. Admitted into the Richmond Hospital with injury of the leg on the 1st Nov.r 1852. He was sitting on a cart in a state of intoxication, his right leg slipped between the body of the cart and the wheel which kept rubbing it for a length of time until at last the limb became caught between the spokes. There was no fracture but considerable swelling of the foot with two spots of rusty red colour were observable on admission. Gangrene supervened and extended up the limb. He died on the 25th Nov.r 1852'.

A split palate


Watercolour medical illustration depicting a split palate. It has the alternative reference number 1238 and P11 on the front. There is no Richmond Hospital Museum reference. The artist's name is in the bottom right corner 'J. Connolly fec.t' and in the bottom left 'Case of Marg.t Kelly Aet 20'. The handwritten note on the back reads 'Case of Tissue of the Palate extending through the whole extent of the soft palate and for ½ an inch thru the hard palate. The operation was performed for uniting the soft palate on Mr Ferguson's plan ie. By dividing the levator & circumplex palati from behind, detaching the mucous membrane from the hard palate on both sides paring the edges of the tissue and uniting by sutures. Union of the soft palate was effected to the extent of ¾ of an inch at its lower part'.

Caries of the temperal bone and abscess in the brain

The typescript note on the back reads 'Caries of the Temporal Bone; Abscess in the Brain – Dr Hutton said:- "The case I am about to lay before the Pathological Society is one of abscess in the brain, connected with disease of the temporal bone. The patient was a girl, aged 16. Always lively and intelligent until her present complaint commenced, with this exception, that she was subject to sick headaches, the pain in the head increasing till she vomited, and then subsiding. At first these attacks came on at distant intervals, but twelve months ago, being much exposed to cold, and frequently sleeping in damp places, they became much more violent, and recurred every fortnight, the pain occupying chiefly the right side of the head. Three months before her admission she began to grow slightly deaf, and sometimes would ask her mother if she heard a noise in her ears, and constantly said that there were figures moving before her eyes. About the same[]'.

Meningo-cocci in serum-sugar-broth


Two sets of four watercolour medical illustrations depicting test tubes of meningococci. It has no reference number and there is no Richmond Hospital Museum reference. The artist's name is in the bottom right corner 'B. O'Farrell' and it is dated 'March 1907'. Both sets of test tubes are labelled G, L, M and S. The handwritten note above the top set reads 'Meningo-cocci in serum-sugar-broth. Temple St. above' and below the bottom set reads 'Holles St. (genuine) below'.

Pleuritis & pneumonia


Watercolour medical illustrations depicting pleuritis and pneumonia. It has the alternative reference number 1970, 192 and P2C on the front. There is no Richmond Hospital Museum reference. The partial handwritten note in the bottom left corner reads 'Pneumonia. Case of diffuse inflammation after venous []sution. Death upon the 20 day after V.S. [] case book page 57'. The handwritten note on the back reads 'Bb.4. Andrew turner. Diffuse Inflam.t See case book p. 57. Pleuritis & pneumonia. Andrew Turner aet 23 of intemperate habits, was [?] on the 6th May/36 for difficulty breathing, consequent on a severe beating he had received on the previous day. He was admitted into the hospital on the 12th, suffering from headache, debility, cough and hurried respirations, the arm in which he had been bled was covered with an erysipelatous blush, the accompanying [?] was of a typhoid character. He became worse daily, the erysipelas appeared in patches on different parts of the body, the knee joints became distended with fluid, he [?] at night. Pleuritis and pneumonia set in, his breathing became diaphragmatic, the pulse rose to 140, abdomen tympanitic, countenance haggard, twitching of the muscles when he slumbered. He died on the 26th'.
